A “MANIAC” driver has been caught on camera speeding along a 20mph residential road - and past a Bradford primary school - at “well over 60mph”.

The driver of the black Volkswagen Golf can be seen overtaking a car in Fagley Road, Fagley, and going off into the distance at high speed.

The car passes St Clare’s school, a number of houses, and a young cyclist who just gets out of the way in time.

The standard of driving has been condemned by the motorist who filmed it, and also by the three Eccleshill ward councillors.

The driver who captured the footage on his dashboard camera said: “He had no respect for other road users or youths who were on the road.

“I believe that youth on the bike is lucky that he was facing us directly so he saw him early enough to just get out of the way.

“The driver was a lunatic for driving that fast outside primary school in 20mph zone. The video doesn’t really show how fast he was going.”

He added: “It has been declared SORN and probably had no insurance, and was driven at a speed well over 60 in 20mph zone outside a primary school.”

Councillor Brendan Stubbs (Lib Dem) said his group had campaigned for 20mph zones outside schools in the Eccleshill ward, and added: “They are completely pointless if people are going to tear down the road at 60mph to 70mph.

“We shouldn’t tolerate it. We are all adults, have learned to drive, and have all passed a test.

“But if you drive like a maniac you are going to seriously hurt someone or even worse.

“You are not in control of a vehicle when you are doing those speeds in a residential area. They could have taken out anyone, even someone on the pavement.”

He added: “We have campaigned for all areas around schools to be 20mph. Kids do not bounce back when hit by a car.”

The incident happened at 3.40pm on Saturday.

Cllr Nicola Pollard (Lib Dem) said: “I think it is appalling and it shows a shocking disregard for other people’s safety.

“We encourage people to report licence number plates to the police.

“It is lucky that no-one was injured on this occasion, but if people are driving like that all the time, then it is only a matter of time before they do injure someone.”

Councillor Geoff Reid (Lib Dem) said: “We cannot cope with that sort of driving on Fagley Road. It is not made for that.

“The width of the road and the local conditions make it very, very foolish indeed.

“It would be silly on any bit of Fagley Road, but especially the bit where the school and the estate are.”

The offending car has an MOT until October, but has been declared off the road, according to the DVLA website.
