A PHOTO exhibition charting the rise of pay-as-you-feel cafes will open this year’s Saltaire Arts Trail.
Photographer Shy Burhan has visited about 70 of the cafes across the UK, from Plymouth and Southampton to Edinburgh and Glasgow, taking pictures at each one.
Her journey is featured in her exhibition - entitled Places, Amity, Youth and Food - at the pay-as-you-feel Saltaire Canteen, in Victoria Road.
“People say these cafes save their lives,” said Shy, who said there are about 100 pay-as-you-feel cafes in the UK, saving and using food destined for the bin. “It is a lifeline for people. Some people have only £5 a week for groceries.”
She added: “It is about tackling waste food, but also about people coming together as well. They are all their own little communities.”
The arts trail is in its tenth year of opening up Saltaire’s spaces through contemporary art. It is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 5pm. Shy, who is hosting an event at the canteen on Thursday evening, said: “It is a huge honour to open the trail.”
