SUMMER signals the start of school sports days.

Whistles will soon be blown to herald the start of the traditional egg and spoon, obstacle and many more races that will be run, walked and so on in the coming months at schools around our city and district.

There will be plenty of excited parents, and pals, cheering from the side lines, willing the participants on as they compete against their peers.

But the final race, traditionally, tends to be down to the parents and the tables are then turned as their children are the ones cheering them on!

Here we turn the clocks back to 1936 with two images of sporting events at Belle Vue High School for Boys in Bradford and Hanson High School's annual sports at Undercliffe cricket.

Our first photograph shows: "some of the competitors at the annual sports of the Belle Vue High School for Boys held at Horsfall playing fields" on May 21 1936 and the second image of Hanson High School's annual sports day at Undercliffe cricket. The left of the photo shows boys throwing the cricket ball and to the right competitors are waiting their turn.
