FIRE chiefs are warning people to be careful to avoid accidentally sparking a grass fire following recent incidents in West Yorkshire.

The latest incident happened today on moorland just off Brow Top Road, near Keighley.

Fire crew from Keighley station used beaters to put out the flames and then damped down the area with water.

The cause of the fire, which happened at around 4.30pm, is not known.

A fire service spokesman said moorland and grassland was currently very dry.

"It is important that people are careful with cigarettes, barbecues and matches as the grass is very dry."

A second grass fire happened on a banking next to the Spen Valley Greenway, just off Strawberry Avenue at Liversedge.

A crew from Cleckheaton fire station used beaters to extinguish the fire at around 2.45pm today. It is believed that children playing with matches may have started the fire.

A firefighter who attended the incident said that the grass was "amazingly dry".
