A HOUSING landlord, who failed to carry out improvement work on one of his properties when ordered to do so by Bradford Council, has been fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £750 prosecution costs.

Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court heard yesterday that Tariq Aziz had failed to comply with an improvement notice after the council found a number of issues at the property, in Kingswood Street, Great Horton.

Harjit Ryatt, prosecuting for the Council, said some of the hazards found were serious, and others were in a slightly lower category. They included the house being cold due to no heating and draughty doors and windows, and no fire alarm or smoke detector systems. There were also hazards from loose floorboards and paving slabs.

Aziz, of Astral View, Horton Bank Bottom, Bradford, pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to comply with an improvement notice.

Chairman of the Bench Beryl Eakin told Aziz: "This is a very serious offence where people's lives were put at risk by your inaction."
