FIREFIGHTERS have tonight rescued two children who became stuck on a quarry face.

Five fire appliances and more than 20 firefighters went to Bolton Woods quarry, Bradford, to reports of two children and an adult said to be stuck on a ledge between 15 and 20ft from the ground.

There was no sign of an adult when crews arrived but two boys aged 12 and ten were rescued from a ledge.

They were not injured but were too frightened to move, having climbed up while playing in the quarry.

A fire service spokesman said a "line rescue system" and a ladder were used to bring the children to safety.

This involved a firefighter being lowered down the cliff face on a line and then both boys were able to climb down a ladder while attached to a line.

A dad whose son, 12, raised the alarm when his friends became stuck, said he had done the right thing.

"My son phoned me and then the police and ambulance. He's only 12."

The father said that fences around the quarry needed to be improved.

"A policeman was saying that the kids shouldn't be on the quarry but it's an open area. Fences should be all around it as some of the drops are about 50ft."

He said it was difficult to stop children playing there as "boys will be boys".

Fire appliances attended from Shipley, Bradford and Rawdon with the Technical Rescue Unit from Cleckheaton and aerial appliance from Bradford.

The incident was reported just before 7.

Police officers, the ambulance service and members of the Calder Valley Search and Rescue team also attended the scene.
