AN ARMY bomb disposal team was called after suspected military shells were found in a garden.

Police guarded the grounds of a house in Clock View Street,  Beechcliffe, Keighley, after a member of the public found the suspect items while gardening last night.

The army’s Explosive Ordnance Team (EOD) examined photographs of the mortar shells last night and arrived this morning to deal with them.

Members of Keighley Bridge Club were shocked to learn of the find when they arrived at a nearby property last night for their regular game.

One member said: “I was told two shells had been found. Police were rung and cordoned our car park off.

“We were able to hold our Bridge Drive and when we left the police were still guarding the area waiting for the bomb squad to come from Catterick camp.”

A police spokesman said police were called to Clock View Street at just before 7pm last night.

He said: “Police consulted with the Army EOD after taking pictures of the items, which were thought of be mortar shells.

“Following EOD advice, the shells were guarded overnight away from buildings.

“The EOD attended at around 9.40am this morning and confirmed the two shells were training devices which pose no risk to the public.”
