A NEW set of historic images from Bradford’s photographic archive is being shown on the big screen in City Park as part of a slideshow called On The Move.

The latest offering features images from the CH Wood Collection, a commercial photographer whose work from the 1920s through to the 1970s makes up the largest section of the 500,000 prints and negatives housed at Bradford Industrial Museum, in Eccleshill.

The idea is an ongoing partnership with Bradford UNESCO City of Film, which regularly brings a selection of historic images to the big screen in City Park. The North In Focus exhibition displays some of the most recently digitised images at 12.15pm every day. The two-and-a-half-minute slideshow is intended to bring the historic images to a new audience.

The latest set shows a variety of transport methods, documenting trolleybuses in 1938, a locomotive in 1950, Jowett cars in the 1950s, motor showrooms in the 1950s and 1960s, through to a vintage Vauxhall and a police scooter both in 1962.

John Ashton, photographic archive assistant at Bradford Museums and Galleries, said: “With images selected from the CH Wood collection, On The Move illustrates how this renowned Bradford photographer, himself a keen motorcyclist, recorded the growing importance and popularity of mechanised transport in all its forms.

"The motor vehicle came of age during the twentieth century and the work of CH Wood reflected the significant effect it has had on our lives in this part of the world. During his long career CH Wood photographed many vehicles both big and small, serious and quirky, from Gott’s pop vans to the Flying Scotsman, an Esholt sewage works steam engine to International Harvester’s 100,000th tractor and all manner of motors between.”

Bradford UNESCO City of Film director David Wilson said: “This new exhibition will share with the city yet more unique and beautiful images from Bradford Museums photo archive, including those showing the city’s rich industrial heritage of the Jowett factory and International Harvester.

"We always have a lot of interest in the North in Focus exhibition and the screen really lends itself well to exhibiting these fabulous images. Having them here in City Park for all to see is a real privilege.”

The North in Focus exhibition on the big screen changes every two months, using recently digitised photos from the Bradford Museums and Galleries archive, which is housed at Bradford Industrial Museum.

It includes a number of significant collections, including CH Wood, Christopher Pratt, Belle Vue Studio and Bradford Heritage Recording Unit.

The archive also holds a number of smaller collections of negatives and prints donated to the museums and galleries service.
