POLICE want to permanently revoke the licence of a Bradford pub after officers were called to a drunken brawl involving up to 100 people in scenes described as 'total mayhem'.

Eight people were injured, including three left unconscious, after violence broke out at The Newby Square pub in Bowling Old Lane, West Bowling.

The police, who had to send firearms officers to the scene, said up to 100 people had been involved in the fighting on January 31, with tables and chairs smashed to be used as weapons.

The pub's licence has been temporarily suspended until Bradford Council's licensing committee can meet next week to hold a full review of the police's calling for it to be permanently removed.

New documents released ahead of the meeting describe the scenes when officers arrived at the pub, where a party had been taking place.

Sergeant Michael Cheetham, of Bradford East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said when he arrived, there were already a large number of police there, including firearms officers.

He said: "There was clear evidence of disorder, broken glass, furniture, injured and hysterical people and damaged vehicles.

"The front of the premises was badly damaged, a number of large windows were smashed and I was informed by my officers that people had been jumping out of the windows through the glass to escape the disorder inside.

"The inside of the premises was a scene of total mayhem, tables and chairs destroyed to be used as weapons, injured people, broken glass.

"There were also large numbers of one-litre bottles of vodka, whisky and other spirits on the floor and bar area."

He said there were 30 to 40 empty bottles of spirits on tables and the floor, and it appeared they had been sold to customers for £13 each.

Sgt Cheetham said the premises and manager were "not fit for purpose" and presented a risk to the public.

In total, eight people were injured - six men and two women - in the violence.

The documents show that back in October, the police had spoken to pub staff, raising their concerns about how often they were getting calls about the pub, and an action plan had been agreed.

On January 31, a party had been advertised on Facebook specifically for the Slovakian and Czech community, the police documents show.

But staff told them a group of about 50 Eastern European gypsies had arrived and fighting had broken out between this group and the other customers present.

The Bradford District Licensing Panel meets at City Hall on Monday to review the pub's licence.

It has a number of options available, including revoking or suspending the licence or imposing conditions.
