HUNDREDS of potato lovers once again sifted through boxes of rare breeds of the much-loved vegetable at Saltaire's ever popular Potato Day.

The event, held in Shipley's College's Exhibition Building yesterday, was organised by the West Yorkshire Organic Group, said to be the second oldest group of its kind in the country.

A total of 41 varieties of potato were on sale, with the event proving popular with families and people of all ages.

Charlotte potatoes were said to have sold out the fastest, closely followed by Desiree.

John Dallas, one of the organisers of the event, said people bought the potatoes to plant themselves, with different breeds taking between ten to 20 weeks to harvest.

"Desiree have been very popular this year, which may be down to the fact that Delia Smith said they make the best jacket potatoes," he said.

"People like the taste and seem to like growing them.

"We've seen similar numbers of people here as last year, but there have been lots of new faces, which is great."
