OWNERS of tumble dryers in Bradford who are concerned about fire safety are being urged to contact the manufacturer by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The advice has been prompted by a fire this morning in a tumble dryer in the basement of a care home in Bradford.

Two fire crews were called to the unnamed care home in Bierley Lane, Bierley, at around 9am.

A fire service spokesman said no-one had been hurt and the care home staff had followed the proper procedures in evacuating around ten residents to one room.

The cause of the fire in the Whirlpool tumble dryer is thought to be a build up of fluff, said a fire service spokesman.

"There is fluff and there is a heating element - the two don't go together," said the spokesman.

"There is a national campaign on the issue at the moment. If people are concerned they need to contact the manufacturer."

The fire service spokesman said fire doors at the care home had stopped the smoke from spreading from the basement.

The care home machine's manufacturer, Whirlpool, has recently given advice to owners and has issued a recall to a number of tumble dryers sold in the last 11 years.

It has been reported that owners of large air-vented dryers and condensing dryers under the Hotpoint, Indesit and Creda brands may need to have them fixed.
