BRADFORD Council's vision for Saltaire - which included the controversial felling of the trees in Victoria Road - has been nominated for an award.

The authority's Saltaire Management Plan won the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Yorkshire Planning Excellence Award last year and it will now go forward to the national competition in May.

Councillor Val Slater (pictured), Bradford Council’s heritage champion said: "The Saltaire World Heritage Site combines a significant historical site with a modern, vibrant community.

"These awards recognise how well Bradford Council’s stewardship of Saltaire is regarded by professionals in the planning industry and a ringing endorsement of the hard work being done to manage this prestigious world heritage site for the people of Saltaire as well as visitors from near and far."

The plan for the Unesco site comprises more than 50 separate projects, covering areas like conservation, tourism, education, transport and the community.

But the felling of the trees, to make the pavements more accessible, divided opinion locally.
