A BRADFORD bowls club is "in limbo" after a "sickening" arson attack on its clubhouse, according to its secretary.

The Bradford Council-owned base of Bradford Moor Bowls Club, Bradford Moor Park, Killinghall Road, was set alight in three different seats of fire, causing "significant damage".

A spokesman for Bradford Council's parks and landscapes department said it was still assessing the damage and the cost of the attack is also not yet known.

The suspects targeted the club on Sunday, breaking in through the steal shutters over the clubhouse's windows.

Now the club faces a race against time to see if they will be able to re-open in time for the new bowls season, which begins on April 2. The club has 32 members.

But the suspects did smash up the clubhouse's toilets and all of the electricity supply at the site may need re-wiring.

Bradford Moor Bowls Club secretary Barry Durrans, 78, of Eccleshill, said: "It's just a bit sickening. It's just unbelievable.

"We have nothing in there worth stealing. We just don't understand what is going on?

"We are not doing any harm to anybody. We can't figure it out at all.

"One of our bankers is driving past the park and saw the smoke and saw the smoke and saw the fire engine.

"The inside of the hut is ruined. They have smashed everything up including the toilets.

"They used a crowbar to force one of the shelters over the windows to get in.

"We are all a bit sick after it. Everywhere is smoke damaged.

"This is the second time it's happened, almost exactly 12 months ago.

"We have definitely been targeted.

"It's early doors but we need a hut of some description.

"It's just up in the air. We will have to see what the assessors from the council have to say."

A Bradford Council parks and landscapes spokesman said: "We are still in the process of assessing the extent of the damage.

"Until a full assessment has been made it is difficult to comment further."

West Yorkshire Police has appealed for help from anyone who may have been in or around the Bradford Moor Park on Sunday.

Two engines from Bradford Fire Station were called to the fire which took place between 2.20pm and 4pm on Sunday.

No-one was injured or suffered any smoke inhalation in the incident.

Constable Martin Junni, of Bradford District Police, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity on Sunday afternoon who has any information about the incident. Enquiries are still ongoing."

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact PC Martin Junni via 101 quoting reference 13160055729 or call independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
