A MAN who fell from a bridge on a main route into Bradford city centre was helped by a passer-by trained in first aid.

The 54-year-old was found on Manchester Road near to Odsal Top and suffered pelvic, wrist and spinal injuries in the incident which happened at 3.40am.

Tonight police could not say what his current condition was, but earlier he was described as being in a stable condition at Leeds General Infirmary.

James Perkins, 31, was riding his scooter to Associated Waste Management in Canal Road, where he is a lorry driver, when he saw a man on the ground in the early hours of this morning.

The injured man, who is thought to be local, was across two lanes of the dual carriageway and being treated by a paramedic.

Mr Perkins parked his scooter close to the man to shield him from any oncoming vehicles.

"It was shocking. It's not something you expect to see when you are on your way to work.

"I was first at the scene and assisted with first aid.

"I saw his body laid in the road and thought he had been knocked over,” he said.

"I'm a trained first aider and that's why I stopped. The ambulance responder car was parked right in front of him.

"I asked the paramedic if they needed any help.”

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said the man's multiple injuries were thought to be "quite serious".

Mr Perkins said he helped until an ambulance arrived and the man was put on a spinal board and taken to hospital.

"It's not something you expect to see, there were not too many cars on the road at that time of night,” he said.

"[The paramedic] told me to hold the side of the man's head to keep his neck settled as he had suspected back injuries.

"Being a heavy goods driver, you get to see certain incidents but nothing like this.

"I went to work when the ambulance arrived."

Huddersfield Road/Manchester Road at Odsal Top roundabout was closed both ways for several hours. It reopened at 10.56am.

Stacey Bergen, 27, of Odsal, said she was woken up by the emergency services at the scene.

She said: "It was mental.

"I just heard the sirens and saw the vehicles near the roundabout."
