THE pregnant wife of a 32-year-old man who battled until the end in what was his fourth fight against cancer has paid tribute to her husband's strength and bravery.

Danny and Adele Webster found out less than a month ago that the acute myeloid leukaemia he had fought off in 2013 had returned.

The heart-rending diagnosis came shortly after the couple had announced before Christmas that they were to become parents to a baby boy, due in May.

After becoming unwell on Boxing Day with what he thought was a flu virus, Mr Webster went for a check-up, only to be told that the leukaemia had returned.

He was hospitalised shortly afterwards and began chemotherapy treatment at St James's Hospital in Leeds, where he was cared for in the intensive care unit.

However severe pneumonia saw him lose his battle last Friday, surrounded by his wife and immediate family members.

His wife, 30 and five months pregnant with the couple's longed-for baby, praised her husband's strength, saying: "He was the strongest person I know and despite going through all this himself, he was always looking out for other people and thinking of others.

"I don't think his death has really sunk in yet, but I take comfort from the fact that he is no longer in pain. It wasn't fair for him to have to go through it all again."

Mr Webster, who was from Cleckheaton, had battled another form of cancer twice in his youth, being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma at the age of 15. Then only two months before the couple were due to marry in 2013, he was diagnosed with leukaemia, which saw him undergo high dosage chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

The couple, of Occupation Lane, on the Heckmondwike and Dewsbury border, married the following year and would have been due to celebrate their second wedding anniversary shortly.

Due to the radiation treatment Mr Webster had received, the couple required IVF as they battled to start a family of their own, and were able to announce in December the happy news that they were expecting.

"It's all he ever wanted, to be a dad, " said Mrs Webster, who works at UK Greetings in Dewsbury.

"What keeps me going at the moment is that I feel like I haven't lost him completely as he will carry on in the baby."

Mr Webster was a contract electrician, and was unable to work during his illness, so long-time friend Trevor Cadieux began a fundraising campaign to help provide the family with vital financial support.

So far his Go Fund Me page has raised almost £6,000 in less than a fortnight.

He thanked everyone online for their kind words and generosity, saying of Mr Webster's death: "Our hearts are shattered and I cannot find the right words to say. Please keep going, Adele and their little boy need your help more than ever."
