BRADFORD has been chosen to start a national campaign calling for British people to unite in celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday.

The organisation One Britain One Nation is urging people of all faiths, races and backgrounds to come together to mark the monarch's landmark birthday this year and at the same time celebrate what it means to be British.

It is unveiling the campaign at Bradford City Hall on Friday.

Dignitaries from across Yorkshire will descend on the city for the event, including the keynote speakers the Right Reverend Dr Toby Howarth, Bishop of Bradford, and Professor Lord Patel of Bradford.

One Britain One Nation was founded by former Bradford police inspector Kash Singh to celebrate a multi-cultural and patriotic Britain.

Mr Singh said: "This is an ideal opportunity for us to bring out the best in all our communities so that we stand together as one people, to promote that spirit of togetherness in order to create a sense of national unity and pride while also projecting that genuine affection between the Crown and the country."

The Queen turns 90 on April 21 and her official birthday will be celebrated in June.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, said: "Her Majesty the Queen's forthcoming 90th birthday will give the country a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Her Majesty’s long life, decades of steadfast duty and her unstinting service to the people of the country.

"This initiative by One Britain One Nation will provide a splendid showcase for national unity and togetherness and will further enhance what is sure to be a joyful occasion."

Kersten England, chief executive of Bradford Council, said: "I am pleased that One Britain One Nation has chosen Bradford to launch its national campaign to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday.

"We are looking forward to all the different ways in which communities from across the district will come together to celebrate this landmark event."

Lord Patel said: "This national campaign from One Britain One Nation to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday gives us the chance to promote the values we all share in Britain of tolerance, kindness, pride and respect, and it is the sharing of these values which I believe creates unity within our communities and enriches us all, socially and culturally."

Bishop Toby said: "Gathering together to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday is a simple but profound way of demonstrating our common commitment to the values that she embodies."

Keen Royalist Judith Watkinson, of Yeadon, said it was great Bradford had been chosen for Friday's event.

And she said this year she would like to see more venues playing the National Anthem, and people singing it, to mark the important occasion.
