A MAN who obstructed a police officer and hurled abuse at him in Bradford City Park has been jailed for eight weeks.

Lee Dunn, 30, repeatedly swore at the officer and said he would "smash his face in", Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Suzanne Paige told the court that police had been called to Channing Way at around 6.45pm on December 14 last year after CCTV reports of two men seen self-harming in City Park.

When officers approached Dunn, of Barkerend Road, Bradford, he verbally abused them and clenched his fists in a manner that led them to believe he was carrying a sharp weapon.

After police drew their batons, Dunn refused to drop to his knees and had to be restrained up against the window of a Nando's restaurant before being arrested.

He said he could not remember the incident in a police interview the following day, but admitted the offences after being shown CCTV of the incident.

Amjad Khan, for Dunn, said his client, who appeared via video-link from Armley Prison, was an alcoholic with mental health issues.

He said he had been trying to stop his friend self-harming when seen by police, and had been acting as a "good samaritan".

Dunn pleaded guilty to charges of obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty and using abusive words with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful licence during yesterday's hearing.

He was sentenced to four weeks in prison for each offence.

He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £80, which was added to an existing compensation order of £444, with the full sum to be paid by March 31.
