FAMILY flew in from Norway to join the celebrations as a resident at a Bradford nursing home turned 103 today.

Edna Sharp was joined by her son, Richard as well as her grandson David, his wife Jennifer, and their 15-month-old baby boy Oskar George who travelled flew from their home in Stavanger to mark the occasion at Howgate House Nursing Home in Idle.

Richard Sharp, 62, who lives in Otley, said his mother was very happy to see her family.

He said: "She was very pleased and happy to see her grandson and his family, and was really pleased to get to see Oskar.

"She also got the surprise news she will be getting another two great-grandchildren, because Jennifer is expecting twins in June."

Mr Sharp said that even in her old age his mother has kept her great sense of humour.

"When she received her letter from the Queen on her 100th birthday, she asked me why she had sent her a card because she doesn't know who I am, but she was very pleased to get it.

"She has always been very active and enjoyed going out dancing until she was 93 years old.

"Before my father, George, died in 2001 they would go most nights dancing, and even after he passed away she still went out a regularly.

"She enjoyed her life and going out with friends, but she worked at the Bassett's Liquorice Allsorts factory and as a tools maker during the war and she hated that."

Her son said his mother, who moved to Howgate House from Sheffield three months ago, had not lost any of her wit.

"Wherever she has lived people just cannot believe she is as old as she is, staff at her old home were in tears when she left because they did not want her to go. Now she is settled in at Howgate House all the staff here are very fond of her too."
