A FORMER police commander in Bradford has been selected as the Conservative Party’s candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for West Yorkshire in elections next year.

Allan Doherty, who commanded the Airedale and North Bradford division of West Yorkshire Police before his retirement, was selected at a meeting of party members from across the West Yorkshire force area.

The 54-year-old spent 31 years in the West Yorkshire Police Force starting as a cadet and worked his way through the ranks to divisional commander, receiving 22 commendations along the way.

It is expected the election will see Mr Doherty take on incumbent Labour PCC Mark Burns-Williamson.

Mr Doherty (pictured) said: “I am delighted to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for West Yorkshire's PCC election next year and I am looking forward to the campaign.

"I think people in West Yorkshire are ready for a change. I want to use my experience as a policeman and then working with victims to improve the force and help to keep hardworking people and their families safe and secure across West Yorkshire.

"I know there are areas of the force which can be made more efficient and officer time can be used more productively."
