A WOMAN from Cross Roads, near Keighley, has received a letter from the Queen congratulating her on her 105th birthday.

Ada Thompson marked this special milestone on Saturday.

She was born in Oxenhope and has lived in the area all her life.

She was a pupil at Lees School and left when she was 14 to become a twister at Merralls Mill. She later worked at other mills in Oxenhope.

During the Second World War she worked at Anderton Springs, which manufactured parts for aircraft.

When she was 24 she married Eric Thompson, a wool sorter who was originally from Barnsley.

He served in the Royal Navy during the war, and was a gunner on board merchant ships.

The couple were married for 68 years and enjoyed going on holiday to Portpatrick, in Scotland. Mr Thompson died 15 years ago, aged 91.

The couple had one son, Harry, who lives in Haworth with his wife June.

Harry Thompson said his mother was delighted to receive her formal acknowledgement from the Queen.

"She has carers but she does still live by herself," he said. "She has been a bit poorly but now her health is not too bad."
