A yellow weather warning for wind and rain remained in place today as storms continued to batter the district.

The Met Office warned that rain and southwesterly winds would hit Yorkshire today, while the Environment Agency put a flood alert in place on the River Aire.

High winds and driving rain brought widespread disruption to the district yesterday as roofs came crashing down and trees fell.

In Bradford city centre, a roof came down in a pedestrian area and narrowly missed passers-by.

And another fell on top of a police car in Thornton Road. It remains closed both ways this morning due to an unsafe building between Listerhills Road/Lower Grattan Road and Jowett Street.

Part of a roof on a building had collapsed following strong winds. Affecting traffic between Bradford and Allerton.

Meanwhile, a porch collapsed in Harecroft and a Christmas tree fell on top of a car at Woodbank Nurseries and Garden Centre, in Harden Road, Bingley.

This morning, Bradford Council received reports of other buildings that have suffered in the winds such as sheeting blown off the fire-damaged building in Priestman Street, and loose slates coming off roofs all around the district.

Justin Booth, Prinicipal Building Control Surveyor for the Council, said: "It's been a race to get things cleared and fixed before the next lot of high winds."

Last night, a flood alert was put in place on the River Aire's upper catchment. The Environment Agency said: "River levels remain high following Sunday’s rainfall, but are not expected to rise further overnight into Monday morning. Water remains in the washlands and on low-lying land."

In Tyrrel Street, the large roof could be seen on the ground near the road's junction with Ivegate yesterday afternoon.

There were no reports of anyone being injured in the dramatic incident.

Witnesses said the roof had blown down from the top of a building on Tyrrel Street, above KFC and the Nationwide bank.

Usmaan Hussain, who works at the Fliirt dessert parlour on Tyrrel Street, said he was the one who phoned police just after the incident took place around 1.10pm.

“I didn’t see the roof come down, but I heard a loud bang and saw it lying in the street,” he said.

“I thought it was dangerous, so I rang the police.

“I saw people walking around, and I thought there was a chance someone could have been hit and injured.”

Steve and Andrea Raettig, from Scarborough, got caught up in the incident while visiting family in Bradford.

“We heard it, and just thought we need to keep on walking,” said Mr Raettig.

“We then turned around and saw the roof. It was a huge noise, a big crash.

“We had dived under the Gold Connection canopy to get out of the rain, and then it came down. If it had literally been half a minute later, we could have been hit.”

Contractors could be seen this afternoon in Tyrrel Street, a section of which remains cordoned off.

Demolition boss Thomas Crompton said: "We have been stretched quite a lot.
"We got called out to secure the site in Tyrrel Street. We are getting quite a lot of calls.
"We have been out to Leeds yesterday and also to sites that were not secure."

Speaking yesterday afternoon, as Bradford was battered by high winds, a police spokesman said: "The weather is causing serious problems in Bradford and a number of roofs have come down.

"We have sealed off some areas for public safety including a site near the KFC in Tyrrel Street, which was closed after a roof came down nearby.

"Members of the public are being warned that a number of roads have been closed in Bradford city centre following high winds.

"A section of roof has come off a building in Tyrrel Street resulting in that road being closed. A piece of roof has also fallen on the top of a police car in Thornton Road and that road has been closed at Sugden Street."

One onlooker, who was stoof near the KFC staring at the collapsed roof, said: "It's lucky this hasn't happened on a weekday when the pedestrianised area would have been more busy.  "Anyone who had been underneath when that huge thing came crashing down would have been in a bad way."

Thornton Road remained closed yesterdat tea time between its junction with Listerhills Road and Lower Grattan Road, with a police cordon in force outside The Black Swan pub and a crime scene investigation vehicle and police van in attendance.

Earlier yesterday afternoon, there were also reports of several flights due into Leeds Bradford Airport, in Yeadon, being diverted to Manchester and Liverpool because of the strong winds.
