FIREFIGHTERS have warned against 'rubbernecking' after a car fire led to a five-vehicle pile-up on the M62.

Fire crews from Cleckheaton station were called to a blaze in a Renault Clio on the westbound carriageway, between junctions 27 (Gildersome) and 26 at Chain Bar, at 10.50pm on Thursday.

Before they arrived, a pile-up took place at the scene.

A spokesman for the station said: "We think it was caused by people slowing down to look at what was happening. There is a safety message here, which is don't slow down and rubberneck - concentrate on your driving."

A woman in her 20s was taken to hospital as a precaution following the crash.

The couple, aged in their 40s, in the Clio were not injured. The fire started in the car's steering column.
