A DRUNKEN dustman who attacked a former girlfriend with a glass, causing severe lacerations to her neck and hand, has been jailed for three years.

Jason Cowgill, 34, pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding the woman in front of her child at a house in Bradford on June 28.

Cowgill, who was detained in Leeds Prison, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court today.

The court heard that he and his victim argued after they had been drinking.

He raised a glass at her and her hand was cut when she defended herself. He then threw the glass at her as she ran away.

Cowgill had a previous conviction for common assault in 2012 on a different woman, the court was told.

His solicitor advocate, Simon Hustler, said he never intended to cause his victim severe injury.

"He has led a chaotic life dominated by drug and alcohol misuse," Mr Hustler said.

But at the time, Cowgill was working as a dustman and had made great strides forward in his life.

The judge, Recorder Jeremy Barnett, said Cowgill caused the woman severe injuries.

"It was a sustained and repeated assault on the victim," he said.

"This is at the very top of the category for offences of this nature."

Recorder Barnett made a five year restraining order banning Cowgill from contacting the woman.
