BRITAIN'S greatest gymnast Beth Tweddle joined other sports stars at the first Active Bradford PE conference, held at the University of Bradford.

The London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist and three-time world champion addressed almost 100 representatives of primary and secondary schools from across the district, including school governors, head teachers and physical education subject leads on the influence PE and school sport had on her life and career.

Hosted by Bradford Bulls chief executive officer and former international rugby league star Robbie Hunter-Paul, the conference was organised in partnership between the Active Bradford Partnership, West Yorkshire Sport and Bradford Council.

Speakers included the Youth Sport Trust, Association for Physical Education, Sports Leaders UK and Born in Bradford.

West Yorkshire Sport Council member Yusuf Rasul, a sixth form student at Beckfoot School, also took to the stage to share his experiences of Physical Education.

Wayne Jacobs, chairman of Active Bradford, said: "We are delighted with the success of the inaugural Active Bradford PE Conference. It was outstanding to see the range of schools from across our district in attendance and humbling to hear about the work they do every day in helping the young people of our region to be physically active.

Phil Wagner, policy officer - PE and School Sport at Bradford Council, said: “It was heartening to see so many of the district's schools coming together to demonstrate an interest in PE and school sport.

"I hope we can use this event as a platform and catalyst to help support schools to further develop their PE and school sport through working in partnership with Active Bradford."
