A MAN was left "screaming in the road" after being run over outside his house in Bradford over a row about rent, a court heard.

An eye-witness to the incident, which took place on July 17 last year on Bowling Old Lane, West Bowling, told Bradford Crown Court yesterday that Shahid Hussain had driven his Vauxhall Corsa deliberately at Muhammed Pervez, causing fractures to his jaw, cheekbone, nose, and teeth.

Hussain, 34, of Boynton Street, West Bowling, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and two charges of committing an act intending to pervert the course of public justice.

Hussain is on trial alongside Mohammed Khurshid, 34, of Tichborne Road West, West Bowling, who faces two charges of committing an act intending to pervert the course of public justice.

Describing the incident, the witness said: "The guy basically hit him. I saw him being dragged underneath the vehicle and he was screaming in the road."

He added that as the man was lying in the street, Khurshid arrived in a different vehicle and shouted: "Are you happy now? This is what happens when you don't pay your rent."

The court heard that in his police interview, Hussain said he had accidentally hit Mr Pervez while reversing the car, saying he heard a noise and felt like he had hit "a piece of carpet" in the road.

He denied any intention to hurt the victim, saying Mr Pervez had jumped on the bonnet of his car as he tried to leave.

The trial continues.
