PLANS for a micropub in Wibsey have been given the green light by Bradford Council.

The site, named The Hooper Micropub, is set to be opened in High Street, Wibsey, after it was granted planning permission by council planning chiefs.

The proposed opening hours have yet to be confirmed but must fall between 8am and midnight under the terms of the agreement.

It will feature a selection of real ales and will cater for a maximum of 40 customers.

An opening date is yet to be confirmed, as negotiations are ongoing between the site's managers and contractors.

Allison Powell, 50, of Wibsey, will be pub manager alongside son Ryan Bradley, 24, and her partner Graham Lowery, 51, and hope their venture will help return Wibsey back to its vibrant past.

Miss Powell said: "We are bringing it back to Wibsey. It was quite vibrant ten years ago.

"People have been supportive of the micropub and keep asking me when it will open.

"We are working on the cellar at the moment. We know the footfall is good in Wibsey.

"I am in negotiations with contractors at the moment. I would love to say that we will be open for Christmas but I'm not sure.

The application received four letters of support and no objections from the public.

It is currently an empty site which used to be an estate agents and is a two-storey site, but only one of which will be open to customers.

The Bradford Council planning officer's report said: "The proposal is considered an acceptable use for a local centre improving the vitality and viability of the area.

"The impact on neighbouring and visual amenity has been assessed and no harm is envisaged.

"The unit has been vacant for some time. The establishment of an active use will create an active frontage and an increased sense of vitality within the locality.

"The row of buildings on Wibsey High Street is primarily in commercial use.

"This form of operation is relatively new and has already been acknowledged as being a successful addition to local facilities elsewhere with no significant implications for nearby occupiers."

The planning permission for the micropub comes just a month after an unnamed micropub planned for a site in Leeds Road, Thackley was also given the go-ahead. It is due to open in December and will cater for up to 20 customers.

A micropub is a one-room pub. The concept is attributed to publican Martyn Hillier and his pub, The Butchers Arms, in Herne, Kent, which opened in 2005.

In 2013, there were 15 micropubs in England, Scotland and Wales. A year later there were more than 40 and now 11 are registered with the Micropub Association.
