FIREFIGHTERS were called out more than 70 times to bonfires across Bradford over Bonfire Night as West Yorkshire Crews attended 200 call-outs in 24 hours.

Crews reported some instances of fires being lit in streets by people using November 5 as an excuse to burn their rubbish.

Crews at Fairweather Green were called out 33 times between 5pm yesterday and 7am today, Bradford was out 12 times, Odsal had ten calls, Stanningley crews helped out in Bradford seven times, Shipley and Bingley had five turn-outs each and Keighley one.

A crew at Idle fire station had to put out a large unattended bonfire at the back of Thackley Football Club in Aisby Avenue at about 1am which was still about 80ft wide with flames burning up to 12ft high.

Today, a spokesman at Bradford fire station said: "We've been non-stop all night. People have just burning rubbish in the middle of the streets using bonfire night as an excuse."

Despite the high number of call-outs, there were no serious incidents.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton said: "We are pleased that Bonfire Night has passed with no major incidents across West Yorkshire.

"Numerous organised Bonfire Night events have been enjoyed by thousands of people in a controlled and safe environment and we would urge people to attend these public events over the forthcoming weekend.

BONFIRE AND FIREWORK EVENTS IN BRADFORD 2015

“As expected we have seen an increase in activity across the brigade with over 200 incidents attended by firefighters in the 24-hours between the morning of November 5 and November 6.

“In total 80 of those have been fires in the open where refuse and items such as household furniture and wheelie bins have been indiscriminately set alight. Not only does this pose a risk to the public but it ties up our resources unnecessarily and setting light to items such as plastic can be damaging to the environment.

“People can help the Fire Service by ensuring that wheelie bins and rubbish is not left at the roadside to become a target for this kind of irresponsible and illegal activity.

“We will be working alongside police over the forthcoming weekend to ensure community safety.”

The 210 incidents West Yorkshire firefighters were called to included:

Bonfires – 32

Fires in open – 80

Building – 8

House Fires – 2

Garages – 2

Sheds – 1

Skips – 1

Vehicle fires – 16

Bins – 15

Road traffic collisions – 5

A spokesman said: "Our control room received over 900 calls, however, not all of these were emergencies and in many cases advice was given. Some calls were duplicates reporting the same incident."

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service reccommends attending organised events.
