A 23-YEAR-OLD man jailed for his third offence of dangerous driving was told by a judge to give up any idea of a career in the motor industry because he was not fit to be on the road.

Zeeshan Khan rammed a police car following a high speed chase across Bradford in an uninsured green Subaru Impreza with a machete in its boot.

Khan, of Rochester Street, Bradford Moor, Bradford, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on September 12, driving while disqualified and uninsured, and being in possession of an offensive weapon.

He was imprisoned for a total of 23 months and banned from driving for three years.

Khan sped off from the police along Harewood Street, Barkerend, jumping red lights and narrowly missing other vehicles in a high speed chase that included Gilpin Street, Barkerend Road, Otley Road and Gladstone Street.

He became blocked in an alley on Carrington Street and reversed into a pursing patrol vehicle. A police officer was injured leaping on to the Subaru's bonnet to avoid being knocked down.

Prosecutor Alisha Kaye said it was Khan's third conviction for dangerous driving and he had repeatedly been caught driving while disqualified.

His barrister, Andrew Dallas, said the machete was never brandished or seen by the public.

Khan sped off from the police when he panicked because he was a banned and uninsured driver.

It was not a long pursuit and the speed was not the highest.

Khan's parents, who had four other children, would be heartbroken to see their son jailed.

He had an aptitude for motor engineering, and a considerable interest in it, and had been helping his uncle at his garage before trying his hand at other work.

Judge Jonathan Rose told Khan: "Your wholesale unwillingness to comply with the law makes you unfit to drive and makes you a danger to the public."

Khan never gave a thought to the fact that he might injure someone dear to him and did not care if he hurt anyone else.

Judge Rose said it was "frankly miraculous" that no substantial damage was caused during a chase that took place right across the middle of the day.

He jailed Khan for 14 months for dangerous driving and nine months for possession of the machete, the sentences to run consecutively.

Judge Rose ordered that his car, already in the hands of the police, be forfeited, along with the machete.
