THE Yorkshire Veterans' Road Relays took place from Roberts Park in Saltaire and local club Saltaire Striders were celebrating after winning the men's over-35 category.

Will Kerr led off in Saturday's event and handed over just ahead of Quentin Lewis from Baildon.

Graham Corbett took the baton before Tim Bellwood and Stuart Dunbar brought the Striders home in 62min 55sec ahead of City of Hull and Holmfirth, with Baildon fourth.

However, the three fastest over-40 teams ran quicker, with Richmond & Zetland (61min 23sec) beating Bingley (61:35) and Holmfirth (61:35) in a tightly- fought race.

Michael McCartney ran a storming anchor leg for Bingley to overcome a huge deficit and was in sight of the Richmond runner at the finish.

Bingley did win the over-70s race, with Dave Barber, John Smithurst and Tony Kingham rekindling past glories.

The Bingley club were also second in the over-50 category, behind Valley Striders, although John Convery and Simon Fielding ran the two fastest times.

They were second as well in the over-60s behind City of Hull, with Pete Pyrah starring.

The over-35 ladies' race was good quality, with Barnsley (50min 29sec) beating the Bingley trio of Jo Buckley, Lesley Watson and Shona Stone.

Baildon's first team of Emma Stoney, Alison Boyle and Kirsty Allen did well to beat Wakefield for third place.

Mary Green, Sue Becconsall and Sue Thornton helped Bingley win the over-55 section, with Baildon third.

Benefiting perhaps from the absence of the more senior runners on the same day, young Taylor Waddell of Eccleshill Road Runners won his first race when coming home first in the LISTER PARK 5K PARKRUN.

Meanwhile, Tom Adams of Ilkley was victorious in the WITHINS FELL RACE on Sunday after setting a new course record of 38min 49sec.

Almost 6,000 runners were at York for the ten-miler and YORKSHIRE MARATHON.

Mike Burrett of Leeds City won the shorter race in 53min 54sec, while Kenyan Edwin Korir took the longer race in 2hr 15min 6sec.

On a gorgeous day, the largely flat course provided excellent results for Ilkley duo Andrew Merrick and Steve Watson, breaking three hours.

Clubmate Jane McCarthy also knocked an impressive 46 minutes off her personal best from Berlin, running 3hr 2min 24sec to be tenth lady home.
