THE body which oversees public transport in West Yorkshire has won an award for its work preparing for last year's Tour de France.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority was named transport team of the year at the National Transport Awards.

Chairman Councillor Peter Box (pictured) said: "I’m delighted that all the work by the Combined Authority and its partners to ensure that three million spectators were able to travel smoothly and safely to the largest event Yorkshire has ever hosted has been recognised through this award.

"Firstly I would like to thank all the staff at the Combined Authority and in West Yorkshire districts for their hard work in the planning and build-up to the event and over the weekend itself.

“The Grand Départ meant a great deal of planning and preparation for a wide range of Combined Authority staff as well as colleagues from our partner organisations."

He said the event had showcased the county to the world and demonstrated what Yorkshire's organisations could achieve when they worked together.
