BRADFORD Council is working hard to process applications for retailers' and shopping centre signs at The Broadway development ahead of its opening in less than four weeks, it has said.

The authority confirmed consent is required for store signs on the outside of the new £260 million building and that some permissions are still outstanding.

In recent days 'The Broadway' signs have appeared as well as one for Debenhams on the busy Hall Ings side of development.

The Broadway developer, Westfield, has yet to receive official planning permission for its signs, though an application has been lodged with Bradford Council.

Documents as part of the application say designs will be positioned at key locations in various formats for "maximum presence and visibility".

"Bold white letters, internally illuminated create a modern and clean identity, visible and legible from a distance," the documents adds.

"For standout on different exterior materials and glazing - illumination is recommended.

"Stainless steel returns create a premium and elevated feel, in keeping with the building and architectural materials palette."

Stores that have permission in place for their external signage include anchor tenants Debenhams and Marks & Spencer, River Island, New Look, Sainsbury's Local and Superdry.

John Eyles, the Council's major developments manager, said: "Westfield has applied for advertising consent for the main shopping centre signs 'The Broadway'. This will be processed before the centre opens. The signs are to be placed on the building specifically designed in accordance with the approved drawings.

"For other store signs they only need advertising consent if they are on the exterior of the building. No consent is needed in the internal malls.

"We are working hard to get all approved before the centre opens."

A spokesman for Westfield added: "With less than a month to go before opening we are working very hard to put the finishing touches to The Broadway.

"As with any development of this scale we have worked closely with the Council through the project, and we are continuing to work closely with Bradford Council to finalise the last details before the centre opens on November 5."

Westfield said the shopping centre was over 80 per cent let.

A television advert which was filmed in the city last month will be screened for the first time on October 22, exactly two weeks before the shopping centre opens.
