A THUNDER storm caused flash flooding in parts of Bradford, with motorists facing difficult driving conditions this morning after heavy overnight rain.

Last night, there was several inches of water on a short section of Hall Ings next to The Broadway shopping centre development.

And a community centre was damaged as water poured in.

The Bradford City cup game was called off just before kick off as a result of a water-logged pitch.

Cars and buses managed to get through the flood but others decided to turn around rather than risk it.

Telegraph & Argus reader Nabila Hussain said the flooding had affected Hall Ings and an area near the Job Centre.

Contractors at The Broadway could be seen wading into the water to move various items of equipment as members of the public walked through the flood water which was ankle deep.

Flooding caused damage at Bolton Royd Adult Education Centre in Manningham Lane when a large volume of water collected on the flat roof and then seeped inside, damaging ceilings and 12 photocopying machines on two floors.

A fire service spokesman said the water on the flat roof was around a foot deep when crews arrived at around 7.30pm. Fire crews cleaned gutters to allow the water to drain away and did some salvage work inside the building.

The flood caused the fire alarm to sound which alerted the fire service. A crew from Bradford fire station attended.

A second pump from Bradford attended a flood-damaged electric box in Parsonage Road, off Dick Lane, which left nearby homes without power.

A signalling problem caused by a lightning strike is causing delays of up to 40 minutes to trains between Halifax and Bradford Interchange.

Disruption was expected to continue until 9pm.
