THE father of a 15-year-old boy, who was killed in a car crash, is petitioning to get more speed cameras installed on two accident blackspot roads in Bradford.

Amjad Malik says there have been at least 20 accidents, many involving stolen cars or where the drivers have fled the scene, in Leeds Road and Barkerend Road, since teenager Saliq died a year ago.

Mr Malik, who is running a road safety campaign, Consequences of Careless and Reckless Driving, is aiming to get 2,000 signatures so the cameras proposal can be debated by Bradford Council.

Saliq, a keen footballer, was a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf GTi, which hit a parked car, a lamp post and a wall, in Gilpin Street, Barkerend, Bradford, on September 12 last year. He died from head injuries.

Mr Malik, 38, of Eccleshill, Bradford, is campaigning for more speed cameras in Leeds Road and Barkerend Road.

He said: "Every evening there are lads racing up and down these roads.

"Recently, there were three accidents in three days in Leeds Road. We need cameras that measure the speed and take photographs of the driver, so if someone has an accident and runs away, we have their picture.

"We need these measures on the roads. This is happening day in, day out. It's really important we get speed cameras on these roads. They could make the difference between life and death.

"It would be a tribute to my son. We don't want other people to lose their lives due to speed. I urge everyone to sign the petition."

Mr Malik said the only speed cameras on Leeds Road were around the Shipley-Airedale Road junction. He would like to see more cameras put up above that junction, as well as close to the Laisterdyke lights, and near Thornbury roundabout.

Mr Malik has been supported in his campaign by Bradford East Labour MP Imran Hussain, and Councillor Faisal Khan (The Bradford Independent Group, Bradford Moor).

Cllr Khan said: "There is some bad driving going on in the city. Mr Malik lost his son in tragic circumstances and has been really working hard to raise awareness of this issue, and I am fully supportive of his endeavours.

"I support the petition and urge anyone to sign it. We need some form of road calming measures. There is a particular issue with young drivers getting in cars.We should be trying to protect kids from themselves."

Cllr Khan added: "I really admire what Mr Malik is doing. It's hard to imagine what he is going through, and the kind of courage he has to turn his grief to a different kind of energy to do some good. It's a real testament to his strength of character."

More than 100 people have already signed the online petition, which Mr Malik is planning to distribute around schools and homes.

They include David McDermott, whose father Michael was killed in Leeds Road earlier this year when his mobility scooter was hit by a car.

• Syam Khan, 18, of Kimberley Street, Bradford Moor, has been charged with causing the death of Saliq by dangerous driving, and other charges, and is to face trial next year.
