THREE Bradford burglars have been jailed after a judge heard they were behind a series of break-ins and other offences in West Yorkshire.

Most of the burglaries were in Cleckheaton where cars were targeted but one offence was also carried out in Wakefield over a three month period last year.

On one night in April there were two burglaries and two attempted burglaries.

They successfully got away with a Land Rover Discovery and more than £2,000 of electrical equipment from a house in Westgate, Cleckheaton, and a £23,000 Vauxhall Astra was taken from outside a house in Moorside Rise, Cleckheaton. The first vehicle was never recovered, the second was found a fortnight later with false plates.

In the attempted burglaries the intruders were scared off by alarms.

In June, two cars valued at a total of £10,000, were stolen from outside one house in Grove Park, Wakefield, after keys were taken from a handbag inside the house.

Some of the defendants were also involved in the theft of car registration plates which were fitted to other vehicles which were driven off without paying after filling up with diesel or petrol at service stations in the Bradford area.

One man living in Baildon had the plates on his Citroen C3 stolen twice having to pay for the replacements.

Richard Walters prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court yesterday one of the group Nasser Khan, was also involved in a police chase on May 16 last year which ended with him reversing into a police car so his vehicle mounted the bonnet.

Officers decided to stop him after they saw him driving a Honda Accord while using a mobile phone in Alford Terrace.

They signalled him to stop and initially he did and the officer pulled up beside him in Ingleby Road and told him to take his keys out of the ignition and get out but Khan then drove round the police car knocking his bumper off as the two connected, before speeding off.

He was seen driving through the Wheatley Mills complex and pulling out without stopping colliding with another car. That vehicle was written off and the couple inside suffered whiplash injuries but Khan kept driving.

Mr Walters said he was followed through residential areas until he stopped in Fernside Street with the officer some metres behind him. He then reversed the car at the police vehicle at speed with such force it reared up on to the bonnet.

The officer driving could hear the Accord’s engine revving and feared it was going to run over him but the Hussain got out and ran off leaving his passenger and co-accused Bahader Ali Khan at the scene.

Nasser Khan, 33 of Ewart Place, Great Horton, was jailed for a total of five years and eight months and disqualified from driving for four years after he admitted conspiracy to burgle and dangerous driving.

Judge Rodney Jameson QC said he was the “communications man” co-ordinating the burglaries without being present himself.

He said the driving offence was “truly appalling involving flight from the police” and “ramming a police car and very nearly driving backwards over the bonnet.”

Bahader Ali Khan, 25 of Springwood Gardens, West Bowling, also admitted conspiracy to burgle and was jailed for five years and eight months.

Ihsaan Hussain, 25 of Marshfield Street, Marshfields, was jailed for four years eight months after he also admitted conspiracy.
