YOBS throwing missiles, including stones and bricks, at cars on a main road will kill someone unless they are stopped, warns one of their targets.

Jack Holt said the gang has been preying on motorists and residents in Greengates for almost a month.

In one incident, the 57-year-old caught the youths throwing large stones and half-bricks at cars in his driveway in Harrogate Road.

He shouted at them and his friend gave chase dropping his mobile in pursuit which was grabbed by one of the gang members as they ran away, hurling abuse.

"I called the police but they never came. They weren't interested. These idiots have got to be stopped or someone will get killed. They are a menace to life," said Mr Holt, who has filmed the gang in action and put it on Youtube.

But police say they are aware of the issues and are working to resolve them, citing an example of an order put on one youth to restrict his movements.

Mr Holt said the gang brazenly parades and dances on top of the wall on the Matalan site next to his home, lobbing missiles and taunting drivers.

"A bus driver actually stopped to challenge them, a taxi driver tried to tackle them and then they threw a full drink can at one young girl's car. She got out and was shaking life a leaf.

"I've shouted at them but now they have turned on me, shouting abuse every time they see me and throwing half-bricks at cars in my drive. It'll be a brick through my house window next.

"People have got to be careful about how they deal with them because they could end up in court themselves like that garage owner from round here. It's the police's job to sort it out and keep law-abiding citizens safe."

Recently the Telegraph & Argus reported how fuel station boss Suhel Dalal, who runs the 24-hour petrol station nearby in New Line and has been plagued by a teenage gang, was given a conditional discharge at Bradford Crown Court after he chased a youth from his business.

Mr Dalal said the BP petrol station had been targeted by shoplifting yobs who caused mayhem and hurled racial abuse at customers.

He confronted the white teenagers and had waved an iron bar at them to encourage them to leave. The father-of-two admitted using threatening words and behaviour.

Judge Colin Burn, who gave him a 12 month conditional discharge, said he appreciated Mr Dalal's difficulties but told him: "You've just got to phone the police."

Mr Holt believes it is the same gang, of up to ten members, is causing trouble along Harrogate Road.

Ward councillors echo Mr Holt's concerns.

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland (Lib Dem, Idle and Thackley) said: "It's out of control. Police and other agencies have put lots of work into this but it doesn't seem to be working. The police have got to step it up now and parents have got to get a grip.

"These youths belong to someone and they know they are out."

Fellow Lib Dem ward councillor Dominic Fear said it was not harmless fun.

"It's dangerous, it's putting lives at risk and it's got to be stopped," he added.

A spokesman for Power Carz private hire firm, in Harrogate Road, said a minibus had its windscreen broken and a driver's door was dented last week.

He said there had been around five missile-throwing incidents in the past month.

"I'm sick of ringing the police," said the spokesman.

Inspector George Bardell, who leads the Bradford East Area Neighbourhood Team, said: "Police are aware of some ongoing anti-social behaviour issues in the Harrogate Road area of Greengates and are working closely with partners to tackle these.

"One youth who was believed to have been involved was recently served with an order restricting his movements and his behaviour. A number of others have been warned of similar action if they are found to have been involved in repeated incidents. Patrols have also been increased in the area and dispersal orders are being used where appropriate."

He said officers were not aware of any injuries or damages which resulted from the incident recorded by Mr Holt.

"I would ask anyone with information about these males to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111," he said.

Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in Bradford District and police are committed to using whatever legislation is appropriate to tackle it effectively."
