AN MP is liaising with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to ensure "all necessary resources" are available to the family of a young man who drowned while on holiday in Greece.
Yesterday, the Telegraph & Argus reported how solicitors representing the family of Danny Kelly, of Haworth, said the 23-year-old may have fled into the sea after being assaulted.
Police on the island of Zakynthos have launched an investigation. One man has appeared in court charged with assaulting and robbing a friend of Mr Kelly.
Kris Hopkins, MP the Member of Parliament for Keighley and Ilkley, said: “I was contacted by the Kelly family’s solicitor to advise me of the tragic circumstances of Danny’s death.
“My office has since been in regular contact with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to make sure that all necessary resources are made available to his family.
“I have asked to be kept fully updated and stand ready to provide any further support that is required.
“Danny’s passing, at such a young age on his summer holiday, is desperately sad news.
“My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and many friends.”
Mr Kelly had played for Cowling Harlequins and Worth Village amateur rugby league teams.
