AN 11-year-old girl has organised a fun day at her house to raise money for a cancer charity in memory of her great grandmother.

Penny Ham is supporting Cancer Research UK in honour of Marianne Liput, of Bradford, who died of leukaemia, aged 90, in June.

She has spent the school summer holiday organising the event and is expecting more than 100 friends and family members to attend on Saturday, September 5.

The fund day will include a raffle, a guess the name of the teddy bear competition, tombolas, bun stalls, nail art and a DVD and book sale.

Penny, who starts as a student at Leeds West Academy next month, has approached firms including Morrisons, Diggerland and Asda for raffle prizes.

Her grandfather, John Liput, will act as chauffeur for the day for one raffle prize when he drives the winner to Betty's Tea Rooms in Harrogate in his Bentley.

A silent auction is already open online with prizes including tickets to a Bradford City match.

The fundraising target is £500 and it is hoped the fun day, held in Coppice View, Idle, can become an annual event.

Penny's mother, Claire Ham, 35, said: "I'm really proud of her for organising this. She is quite outgoing and likes organising stuff.

"She has done it all herself. She is always doing something. She has been emailing companies and going in and asking people for donations.

"If it takes off, we would definitely look to do it annually. She has done charity raffles in the past."

She said Penny was eager to remember her great grandmother.

"Marianne had leukaemia for a few years. Penny was close to her. It is being held in memory of her really. Penny said she wanted to do something like this fun day.

"A total of £500 is the target. We are hoping to hit that target," she added.

"Penny will have a busy time at the fun day and it has taken a lot of organising. She is doing really well with all of it.

"The silent auction has already raised £130. The response we have had has been fantastic.

"Friends and family are coming along. We have also handed out leaflets to our neighbours inviting them to come.

"Penny has even arranged for Cancer Research UK officials to come and marshall the event.

"We are hoping this will be a great success and have already secured some fantastic prizes."
