TWO Scandinavian speedway legends who won their sport's world title in Bradford have been honoured by the city's Lord Mayor.

Danish rider Erik Gundersen (pictured) and Swedish star Per Jonsson won their championships at Odsal Stadium in 1985 and 1990, respectively.

Now, thanks to Bradford-based speedway fan John Murphy, each rider has received a certificate from the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Joanne Dodds.

The certificates are described as a "token of the high esteem" in which the two men are held in Bradford and the district. The duo's "outstanding careers and contribution" to speedway on the world stage, and the inspiration they have been to young sportsmen and sportswomen in Bradford, is also noted on the certificates.

Mr Gundersen (pictured) was presented with his certificate during Saturday's World Speedway Grand Prix in Horsens, Denmark, by former Bradford Dukes rider Kelvin Tatum, who now commentates on the sport for Sky. Mr Jonsson received his at a speedway meeting in Malilla, Sweden.

Mr Murphy said: "This year is marking 30 years since Erik won the World Speedway Championship in Bradford, at Odsal Stadium. Fittingly, Kelvin rode in that meeting, too. He also rode five years later at Odsal, in 1990."
