DETAILED plans drawn up for a £3.5 million upgrade and refurbishment of Cliffe Castle Park in Keighley go on public display this weekend.

Lottery funding for the scheme was confirmed in 2013 and now the public can judge, and comment, on a selection of the proposals for the whole park including cafe, glasshouses, palm house, fountains, ponds and a bandstand.

And there will also be a suggestion box for visitors' views.

The plans devised by Bradford Council will be on display at Cliffe Castle Museum for at least eight weeks, but that period could be extended if there is sufficient public interest.

The work, funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, is due to start next year and is expected to take up to 12 months.

Councillor Imran Khan, Bradford Council's executive member for environment and sport, said: "This project is great for Keighley and the whole of the Bradford district and we want to make sure we get it right and that visitors are backing our ideas.

"If people make suggestions on what they see we will make sure that their views get serious consideration.

"The Cliffe Castle park project will complement the recent restoration of the Cliffe Castle Museum, recreating and rejuvenating a marvellous asset for everyone to enjoy."

Keighley MP Kris Hopkins said Cliffe Castle had a special place in the hearts of the town's residents and also the many people who travel from outside the town to visit it and the Cliffe Castle Museum.

"The Heritage Lottery Fund award will enable a significant transformation to take place and I would encourage local people to get fully involved in charting its direction," Mr Hopkins said.

"It’s a wonderful opportunity to come up with ideas and see them carried through. It should be grabbed."

Sue Skinner, treasurer of the Cliffe Castle Park Conservation group, said its members were delighted that the final drafts were going on show.

"Getting them has been a bit like drawing teeth, but it's great news and we will continue to work with the council to get the very best result," she said.

Councillor Khadim Hussain (Lab, Keighley Central) said the public display of the plans and drawings was welcome news.

"Sometimes hiccups and delays can put doubt in people's minds, so it's excellent this is going ahead," he said.

"It will be good for the town as it will increase footfall as Cliffe Castle brings in more people from far afield."

The plans and drawings can be seen in the conservatory, which can be accessed through the Cliffe Castle Museum during opening times which are 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 4pm Saturday, Sunday and Bank holiday Mondays.

Last admissions are at 3.30pm.
