A MAN and woman suffered serious injuries in an horrific crash outside Shipley Fire Station shortly after midnight today.

The 27-year-old Otley man had gone to help a woman, 26, who was in Saltaire Road, when they were both struck by a Vauxhall Astra heading towards Bingley.

The man was thrown into the side of the road by the impact and the woman was trapped under the car.

On-duty fire officers were first on the scene after hearing a loud bang.

They administered emergency first aid to the man, who had suffered head injuries, until paramedics and doctors arrived and used airbags to free the woman who was concious and talking but had severe leg injuries.

Saltaire watch commander Paul Turner said: "We were working in the station when we heard a loud bang. We looked out and saw a car in the road.

"A woman was completely under it apart from her head and there was a man lying at the side in the road.

"We treated the man first because he was the quietest, he was unconscious but breathing. We stabilised him and put him on oxygen.

"The woman was talking to us. We calmed her down and used air mats to get the car off her and get her out on to a spinal board."

Both casualties were both taken to Leeds General Infirmary. Today the man's condition was described as stable and the woman's injuries were said to be serious.

The area was cordoned off until dawn as investigators examined the scene.

Police attended and spoke to the male driver, said a force spokesman.

Officers in West Yorkshire Roads Policing unit were back at the scene today and inquiries are continuing.

Any witnesses or anyone who saw the Vauxhall Astra before the crash should call 101 and ask for roads policing.
