FOUR fire crews took about an hour to bring a large fire in a disused building under control today.

Fire engines from Idle, Rawdon, Shipley and Bradford attended the blaze at the derelict building off All Alone Road at Idle, Bradford.

Half the single-storey building was on fire when crews arrived shortly after 2pm.

The building was formerly used by engineering firm Israel Newton.

The blaze gave off a large amount of smoke with flames coming through the roof before it was brought under control.

Crews used three large jets, one ground monitor and breathing apparatus to deal with the flames.

Two firefighters who went into the building had to be decontaminated afterwards to rid their kit of any asbestos fibres from the building's roof. Equipment was swilled down and then washed in soapy water.

A fire service spokesman said the cause was not known but it was likely to have been started by children.

The building is a short distance from Idle fire station whose crew was first at the scene.
