A YOUNG man was so eager to drive the car his father bought him to learn in that he went for an illegal joy ride and crashed it into a wall.

Ishmail Rehman, 22, had not passed his test and was uninsured when he took the Rover 45 and was spotted by the police overtaking riskily, Bradford Crown Court heard today.

He panicked and sped off, cutting a corner and damaging two parked cars, before hitting the wall, prosecutor David Lampitt said.

Rehman, of Parkfield Road, Manningham, Bradford, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on June 14, driving with no insurance and possession of two small bags of cannabis.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 150 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for 12 months.

Mr Lampitt told the court there was a short "blue light" chase when Rehman accelerated away from the police in the Glenholme Road area of Manningham at 2.15pm.

He struck a parked car that was shunted into the vehicle in front, before crossing junctions without stopping and losing control of the Rover.

Rehman had no previous convictions, the court was told.

His barrister, Victoria Smith-Swain, said he made full and frank admissions to the police and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

Rehman's father had got the car for his son to learn to drive in.

He was very excited and impatient to get behind the wheel and he behaved in a stupid and immature way when the police came after him.

"He has let himself and his family down. He made a spur of the moment decision and has regretted it ever since," Mrs Smith-Swain said.

Rehman was actively looking for work and hoped find employment in the security industry.

Judge Robert Bartfield told him: "Temptation got the better of you and you decided to go for a joy ride."

Rehman then tried to outrun the police in a residential area.

Judge Bartfield said it was fortunate that no one, including Rehman himself, was not injured.

He reserved any breach of the suspended sentence order to himself.
