BRADFORD Council has given the go ahead for the demolition of a fire damaged school building in Tong.

The Leeds Catholic Diocese had applied to the council to tear down part of the former Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic School, next to Tong High School.

The building had been targeted by arsonists in March, leaving much of it a shell.

Yesterday council planners told the diocese that council approval for the demolition was not needed. A planning report said: "The two-storey administration block has been subject to fire attack, leaving it damaged beyond repair, a risk to the public from potential collapse and an eyesore."

The diocese had said they would start demolition works early August.
