FIREFIGHTERS have warned people not to get distracted while cooking after a man making chips at 3am caused a house fire.

A fire crew from Fairweather Green was called to a property on Manningham Lane, a house in multiple occupation, at 3.14am today.

A man in his late 20s had started cooking with a chip pan and then fallen asleep. The pan caught fire while the man was sleeping, but luckily the man woke up before the fire had spread too far. By the time the fire crews arrived the fire had burned out, but had caused smoke damage to the property.

Aldene Woodward, watch commander for Fairweather Green station, said: "The property was covered by a good automatic fire alarm system, but smoke alarms don't stop fires in the first place.

"People need to be alert when they are cooking and not get distracted. In this case it mainly caused smoke damage but it could have been a lot worse if something hadn't woken the guy up."
