MEMBERS of a primary school band will be blowing their own trumpets as they play their biggest contest yet on Thursday.

The Foxhill Primary School Brass Band will play Brass Tacks, a concert being held at Queensbury's Black Dyke Mills Heritage Venue and also featuring the world famous Black Dyke Band.

The band is relatively new, having formed last year, but it faced one major hurdle - it had more members than instruments. After a successful appeal in the T&A for support, the 23 strong band is now well stocked and ready to start regular performances.

A £1,000 grant from Queensbury ward councillors has helped the school buy uniforms for the band, and they will debut the snazzy outfits at tomorrow's concert.

Head Sally Hey said: "It is a really big concert for the band, it is a lovely opportunity for the children. We've played school concerts and at the Manorlands hospice, but we're just beginning to get out to gigs like this one. Queensbury is the capital of brass bands, and the vision was to bring brass back to the school. This will help do that, it is a good opportunity to play for local people. Even if just one or two of these children go on to do really well in brass bands then we have done our job."

The concert also features performances by Queensbury Brass Ensemble, the Revolution Show Corps, Queensbury Singers, Holy Trinity Church Choir and a choir made up of school children from around Queensbury.

It starts at 6.30pm on Thursday and tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children. They are available from Firth Cycles on West End or by calling 01274 817483.
