SUPERMARKET workers in Buttershaw have been encouraging customers to help feed people in need by donating long-life food to charity.

A neighbourhood food collection has been taking place in larger Tesco stores from Thursday to Sunday, but at the Buttershaw store, a collection point is available all year round.

The firm is working in partnership with two food charities, FareShare and The Trussell Trust.

FareShare supports 15 foodbanks and food charities in Bradford and The Trussell Trust has three foodbanks covering parts of the district.

Jane Gibbons, of Tesco Bradford Buttershaw, said: "Tesco is committed to reducing food waste and supporting our local community. Customers can donate long-life food, and the charities will distribute it to those in need of help and support.

"Customers buy the food in store and donate, but Tesco does not profit from these sales. All donations are topped up by 30 per cent and Tesco pays for all the marketing materials used to promote the collection, and our colleagues are encouraged to take part in collecting and sorting."

Bradford South MP Judith Cummins (Lab) visited the store yesterday to show her support.
