FIRE crews from four stations, along with ambulances and police cars, responded to a suspected chemical spill in Manningham, Bradford, this evening.

The fire crews included a Hazardous Materials vehicles but they were not needed after checks by police established that the report was a false alarm with good intent.

Emergency services were called to Haji Jewellers in Carlisle Road at around 6.30pm to reports of smoke and a shop worker wearing a mask but on arrival it turned out to be staff using acid to clean gold.

A shop spokesman said he understood that three people went to hospital for check-ups and we quickly given the all-clear.

"It was all a big misunderstanding," said the spokesman.

A fire service spokesman said the initial call came in as "chemical spillage, large" but crews were not needed on arrival.

The road was closed for over two hours, according to shop workers.
