Almost 50 of the district's primary schools were inspected by Ofsted in the last financial year.

Of the 48 visited, 29 were judged to require improvement - 13 had fallen from good, 13 maintained their status as requiring improvement and two improved from inadequate. One had its first inspection.

One school, Greengates Primary School, was judged inadequate, although Ofsted has since acknowledged that the school has shown improvement.

Seventeen of the schools were judged good and one was judged outstanding - Ryecroft Primary Academy in Holme Wood.

Across the district's 157 primary schools, 49 were rated as requiring improvement at their last inspection, 18 are classed as outstanding, and 85 judged good. Four have not yet been inspected and one is inadequate.

Of the 13 secondary schools inspected last year, three were judged inadequate - Carlton Bolling College, Oasis Academy Lister Park and Belle Vue Boys School - all of which were put into special measures.

Belle Vue Boys School is being taken over by the Beckfoot Academy chain, and will re-launch as an academy in September.

Eight were judged to require improvement, one was judged good and one, Beckfoot School in Bingley, was judged outstanding.

Since April, Hanson School and Tong High School have also been given inadequate ratings, with Hanson School being put in special measures earlier this month.

Out of the 33 secondary schools in the district, five are now rated inadequate after their last inspection, 12 require improvement, seven are good and two are outstanding. Seven have not yet been inspected.

The 'requires improvement' rating was known as 'satisfactory' until 2012, when then Ofsted chief Sir Michael Wilshaw decided to change the wording to tackle what he called "coasting" schools.

Schools judged to be inadequate or requiring improvement are inspected more regularly than schools which get a rating of good or outstanding.
