Her unborn child is also understood not to have survived the attack.

The man, also said to be in his 20s, fled the scene and is being hunted by police.

Officers sealed off part of Holker Street and two ambulances were parked outside the house into the evening.

A crowd of people gathered by the cordon.

Friends said Mrs Khan was six months pregnant with her third child.

Her two other children, said to be a boy and a girl aged four and three, are believed to have been in the house when the stabbing took place.

A distraught friend, 42, who did not want to be named, broke down in tears as she said: “She was a very good girl. She was just talking to me last night about going to Ikea on Monday. I was going to take her.

“I cannot believe it. She was so sweet, always laughing and joking.”

Family friend Abdul Khan, 24, said: “She was a nice woman, who kept herself to herself. It is so bad.”

Officers wearing forensic suits carried out a detailed search inside the house.

Today, West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the suspect had not yet been traced.

Last night, Detective Chief Inspector Jim Dunkerley, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police, said: "The body of a woman was found by police and paramedics inside a property on Holker Street. She had suffered fatal stab wounds.

"While the murder investigation is at an early stage we are treating this as a domestic related incident.

"Enquiries are currently ongoing to trace a man in connection with the death.

"This was a very serious incident and will understandably cause a considerable amount of distress and upset amongst the local community.

"To reassure local people we have increased patrols by neighbourhood officers in the area and I do not believe there is any wider danger to members of the public."
