VOLUNTEERS have opened a new foodbank in Wyke offering three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis.

Wyke Foodbank is supported by the Trussell Trust and Wyke Council of Christian Churches and will serve people living in the BD12 postcode area.

The foodbank will work with partners who can then refer people in need and give them a voucher, which can then be taken to the foodbank.

As well as wanting local businesses to sponsor the project, organisers are also appealing for donations of food items.

Alison Cragg, joint project manager, said the first referral had been welcomed on the opening day.

She said: "We've got a good group of volunteers here and the warehouse is organised, so we are just working on putting our systems in place."

She said another church in the area had also agreed to collect food on the group's behalf.

The Trussell Trust has two other foodbanks operating in Bradford - the Bradford Central Foodbank and the Bradford North Foodbank, which opened in January.

Almost 5,000 people were helped by these two foodbanks in Bradford over the last year.

The new foodbank opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11.30am and 1.30pm, from The Hub, Blackstone Avenue, Wyke.
